Calculated from Scripture · Calculated from the years stated in the verses. Chronological estimates and co-regencies can produce different absolute dates.

29 + 119 = 148

GEN 11:24-25

Source calculation and assumptions

The year of Nahor_1's birth is the year his father, Serug_1, was born (1821) + the age of his father at Nahor_1's birth (30) = 1851

The year of Nahor_1's death is the year his son, Terah_1, was born (1880) + the years Nahor_1 lived after his son's birth (119) = 1999

Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. (GEN 11:26) Terah was at least 70 years old when Abram was born. The days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran. (GEN 11:32) Terah died in Haran at the age of 205 in Haran. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. (GEN 12:4) Terah was 205 when he died in Haran and Abram (aged 75) left Haran when Terah died (Acts 7:4). This means Terah was 130 when Abram was born.

Absolute years are conditional chronological estimates. A biblical passage may state an age or event, but does not by itself establish a BCE year. Different calendar systems are preserved separately.

Nahor Summary STEPBible TIPNR

Nahor, the son of Serug and father of Terah, was Abraham's grandfather.

Nahor Article STEPBible TIPNR

Nahor, mentioned in Gen 11:22-25, Jos.24.2, 1 Chronicles Jos 1:26, and Luk 3:34, was the son of Serug and the father of Terah. He was the grandfather of Abraham, the patriarch of the Israelites.

According to the genealogical records in Genesis and 1 Chronicles, Nahor was born to Serug when Serug was 30 years old. Nahor himself became the father of Terah at the age of 29 and lived for a total of 148 years.

In Jos 24:2, it is mentioned that Terah and his family, including Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and served other gods. This suggests that Nahor and his family were originally polytheistic and not worshippers of the one true God.

Nahor's significance in the biblical narrative lies primarily in his role as a direct ancestor of Abraham. His inclusion in the genealogies of Genesis, 1 Chronicles, and Luke demonstrates the importance of tracing the lineage of the patriarchs and establishing the continuity of God's plan through the generations.
