GEN 11:32

Source calculation and assumptions

The year of Terah_1's birth is the year his father, Nahor_1, was born (1851) + the age of his father at Terah_1's birth (29) = 1880

The year of Terah_1's death is his birth year (1880) + his age at his death (205) = 2085

Absolute years are conditional chronological estimates. A biblical passage may state an age or event, but does not by itself establish a BCE year. Different calendar systems are preserved separately.

Terah Summary STEPBible TIPNR

Terah was the father of Abraham, Nahor, and Haran, who left Ur to settle in Haran.

Terah Article STEPBible TIPNR

Terah was the son of Nahor and the father of Abraham, Nahor, and Haran (Gen 11:24-26). He lived in Ur of the Chaldeans, where he worshipped idols (Jos 24:2). At age 70, he became the father of his three sons (Gen 11:26). After Haran died in Ur, Terah took Abraham, Sarah, and Lot and set out for Canaan, but they settled in the city of Haran instead (Gen 11:31). Terah died in Haran at the age of 205 (Gen 11:32). Jewish tradition portrays Terah as an idolater who turned to God. The Bible does not provide further details about his life, but his significance lies in being the father of Abraham, the recipient of God's covenant promises.

Terah Dictionary Easton's Bible Dictionary (1897)

The wanderer; loiterer, for some unknown reason emigrated with his family from his native mountains in the north to the plains of Mesopotamia. He had three sons, Haran, Nahor, and Abraham, and one daughter, Sarah. He settled in “Ur of the Chaldees,” where his son Haran died, leaving behind him his son Lot. Nahor settled at Haran, a place on the way to Ur. Terah afterwards migrated with Abraham (probably his youngest son) and Lot (his grandson), together with their families, from Ur, intending to go with them to Canaan; but he tarried at Haran, where he spent the remainder of his days, and died at the age of two hundred and five years (Gen. 11:24-32; Josh. 24:2). What a wonderful part the descendants of this Chaldean shepherd have played in the history of the world!
