Dates and sources (1)

Absolute years are conditional chronological estimates. A biblical passage may state an age or event, but does not by itself establish a BCE year. Different calendar systems are preserved separately.

Conditional birth estimate

Conditional birth bounds under generation assumptions; not attested parental ages, biological limits or a lifespan.

The anchors give incompatible conditional intervals. This calculation establishes no birth year.

Below are relatives with a selected birth year, the generations separating them, and the interval allowed by each anchor. Each relative’s page shows available dates and sources. The overall estimate uses the intersection of the allowed intervals.

Asa Summary STEPBible TIPNR

Asa was a king of Judah who reigned for 41 years, known for his religious reforms (1Kings 15; 2Chr 14-16).

Asa Article STEPBible TIPNR

Asa was the third king of Judah, son of Abijah (or 'Abijam') and grandson of Rehoboam. He reigned for 41 years, from the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel. Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, removing idols, male cult prostitutes, and high places from Judah. He even deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother because she had made an obscene image of Asherah. Asa faced an invasion by Zerah the Ethiopian but defeated him with God's help after crying out to the Lord. In his later years, Asa sought help from Ben-Hadad king of Syria against Baasha king of Israel instead of relying on God and imprisoned the seer Hanani for rebuking him. Asa developed a severe foot disease but did not seek the Lord's help. He died and was succeeded by his son Jehoshaphat.

Asa Dictionary Easton's Bible Dictionary (1897)

Physician, son of Abijah and grandson of Rehoboam, was the third king of Judah. He was zealous in maintaining the true worship of God, and in rooting all idolatry, with its accompanying immoralities, out of the land (1 Kings 15:8-14). The Lord gave him and his land rest and prosperity. It is recorded of him, however, that in his old age, when afflicted, he “sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians” (comp. Jer. 17:5). He died in the forty-first year of his reign, greatly honoured by his people (2 Chr. 16:1-13), and was succeeded by his son Jehoshaphat.
